Avandia and Avandamet

Avandia and Avandamet

Avandia (rosiglitazone - also sold as Avandamet), manufactured and distributed by GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, has been directly linked to a significant increase for heart attack risk - almost 50% - for those taking the drug. The drug has been widely prescribed since 1999 for the control of blood sugar for patients with the most common form of diabetes (Type 2). Recent studies have not only linked the drug to an increase in heart attacks, but also to a significant increase in heart-related deaths. The response by the drug manufacturer has been to acknowledge a known increase in heart-related problems tied to the drug; however the company has denied the increase is significant.

The FDA has recently voiced its concern over their findings as to the increased risks associated with Avandia, particularly due to the fact that the very group the drug is manufactured for, those suffering from diabetes, are already at a much greater risk of heart-related injuries and deaths because of their condition.

If you, or someone you know is taking Avandia or Avandamet, it is important to contact a physician to discuss this matter with the doctor. We also welcome your contacting us to discuss your rights and the rights of those you care for.
